  2. Reading the Fat Radish review made me really excited to do reviews... and really nervous. I thought it was absolutely beautiful~ really interesting the way everything was touched upon (food, guests, setting, etc.) and still flowed together as ambiance... and you could pick the major themes and get an idea of the place without being there. That's such a big job in nonfiction: you can't be wrong, but description is such a subjective thing. It's like profile writing of a place, kind of?
I also started wondering about the authoritative voice that Bourdain takes on so that we'll believe his taste can speak for us. We're going to have to do that, aren't we?

The F.D.A. obesity pill article had me comparing our society to Utopia-commentary novels, and that "pill for everything" concept. We put money in such strange places. It's as though instead of eating better and investing in health in a proactive way, we'd rather get sick and then have a magical fix on hand. If people have leaks in their houses they don't wait for the ceiling to fall through in the living room and then replace the whole wing of the house.

(I thought this woman's translation of these "sweetsurprise" ads was kind of funny)
